The Subzero Engineering Polar Cap (patent pending) is a retractable containment roof system that attaches to the top of the racks and forms a ceiling that prevents hot and cold air from mixing.

The most unique aspect of the system is the retractable roof. The roof is designed to retract into a metal cassette should a fire occur. The metal cassette is the main component of the Polar Cap roof system, and it houses the roof material as well as the retraction mechanism. When a fire occurs, the roof automatically rolls up into the metal cassette avoiding any interruption to the sprinkler pattern making sure the clear vinyl material is no longer exposed to the fire. The spring loaded return on the metal cassette can be held by either a thermal splicer or by low voltage magnetic coupling. Both fire suppression links will ensure that the roof will retract into the metal cassette and the fire suppression sprinkler pattern will not be interrupted in the event of a fire.

The Polar Cap retractable roof system can be wired into a pre-action smoke detector system. The roof will roll up into the metal cassette in advance of the fire sprinkler. The retractable roof can also be retracted during maintenance of above containment items such as lights and other periodic inspection items.

Designed not to hinder the fire suppression pattern:

• The fusible link melts and releases the vinyl sliders should the temperature go beyond the level that the sprinkler system is activated.
• EML connector is wired to the smoke detector systems. Should a fire get detected by the alarm, it will send a low voltage electrical signal to the EML and release the retractable vinyl roof.

The Polar Cap comes in lengths of up to 30-feet and the cassette comes in widths of up to 78 inches. Multiple Polar Caps can be used to cover the required space. The Polar Cap has slides on all four sides that allow for a vinyl sheet to slide into place. The Polar Cap is also designed to easily attach panels to eliminate areas where there are missing cabinets, rack rows with a "cityscape", or just uneven rows.
